August 2019

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Hayden Peak Elementary!  Everyone here is eager to begin a great new school year.  I am honored to join the Hayden Peak family once again.  As some of you may know I was an Assistant Principal here for two years and I have many fond memories of my time here.  As the Principal of Hayden Peak I intend to work hard to help all students learn and grow and support teachers and staff as we strive to ensure the success of all of our students.  I am grateful for the opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers on a daily basis, while also remaining connected to our students learning and growing in the classroom. I firmly believe that every child can excel and that the partnership between home and school is critical to their success.

I come to you with 26 years of educational background in Jordan School District.  I received my Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Wyoming.  After graduating I moved to Utah where I taught 6th grade and 6th grade ALPS for 14 years at Jordan Ridge Elementary in South Jordan, Utah.  I received my Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Brigham Young University and then became an Assistant Principal for two years at both Hayden Peak and Welby Elementary.  I then served as the Gifted and Talented Consultant for Jordan School District. After two years at the District Office I was appointed Principal at Welby Elementary and spent the last seven years there.  It is wonderful to be coming back to serve as Principal at Hayden Peak Elementary for the coming years.  I have worked with Mr. Butler in the transition back to Hayden Peak and look forward to continuing the amazing work that has been going on here for many years.

On a personal note I come from a large family whom I love to spend time with.  I am a “favorite aunt” to 16 nieces and nephews whom I adore.  The arts are a large part of my life and I enjoy reading, traveling, baking and entertaining, singing and serving in my community.

To our students, I cannot wait to meet you all! I hope that you are excited for this coming school year and that you have had a great summer.  It is going to be a fun year learning together.

In closing, please know that my door is always open to you. I welcome the opportunity to get to know all of you and work together to help your children learn and grow.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Fisher

Spring is Here!

We are thrilled that the weather is warming up and we are starting to see flowers blooming! With the change, we are all excited to wear our warmer weather clothes. Please review the dress code to ensure your students are dressed appropriately for school. Jordan District policy states, “All students shall wear clean clothing. Students shall not wear clothes that are mutilated, cut off, or immodest, e.g., short shorts, mini skirts, bare midriffs, halter-tops, spaghetti straps, tank shirts, or similar clothing. Clothing shall cover the midriff, underwear, backs, and cleavage at all times. Skirts, dresses and shorts must be at least mid-thigh length or longer when seated.”

As the weather warms up, more students are walking and riding their bikes to school. Please be aware of our students to ensure their safety. Please remember to drop off/pick up your students in the designated lane at the front of the school and leave the lane on the west side for kindergarten and daycare. Please remind your children to use the crosswalk to safely cross any street. Children learn best when behavior is modeled for them so we ask that adults also use the crosswalks and not direct their children to run across the street unsafely.

Spring means RISE testing is around the corner. Our 3rd – 6th grade students will begin their state RISE testing on Monday, April 22, 2019 and going through Friday, May 17, 2019. Below are suggestions to assist your student during testing:

  1. Make sure your child gets an ample, normal amount of sleep the night before the test.
  2. Mark testing days on your calendar to help remind you and your child when the testing will take place and plan your preparations.
  3. The student should eat a nutritious and filling breakfast. Avoid high sugar cereals, which can make the student hyper and/or unfocused.
  4. Set aside time each night prior to the test for several weeks to review the concepts that will be covered.
  5. Work with teachers to find materials to work on at home in preparation for the test.
  6. Make sure the student is on time (if not early) on the day of testing.
  7. Set a backup alarm to avoid the possibility of oversleeping.

SPOTLIGHT! Girls Who Code Club

Hayden Peak Elementary offers many opportunities for our students to expand and share their talents in after school programs. Over the next few months, we will spotlight each of the programs and how your child can participate. This month we are spotlighting the GIRLS WHO CODE CLUB!

This is a brand new after school program for 4th, 5th grade girls. What is coding? It means to construct a set of instructions to implement an algorithm in order to solve a problem. Those instructions then allow a program to run, whether it is on a computer, tablet, or phone.

The club goes from Tuesday, January 15-March 19, 2019. Girls in the 4th and 5th grade will have fun learning this valuable skill.

Welcome back from a long winter break and welcome to 2019! This is the time of year when winter takes a toll on school attendance. Snow and slushy weather can sometimes keep parents from getting their children to school. So can the colds, fevers and earaches that often come with the winter months.

These absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. Students miss out on learning if they aren’t in class and we want every child to be actively engaged in learning. There’s not much we can do about the weather, but there are two key steps every family can take to help avoid absences this year.

  1. Develop back up plans for getting your children to school in winter weather. That could mean checking with other families who have a car that can manage in the snow or forming a “walking school bus” to walk your children to school with other parents. If you’re stuck, call the school. We can connect you with other parents or staff members who can help.
  2. Keep your children healthy.Dress them warmly for the cold weather and make sure they’ve got hats and gloves. Encourage them to wash their hands regularly, and send them to school with a bottle of hand sanitizer. If your children do get sick, talk to a doctor or the school nurse about whether they should come to school and when it is okay for them to return.

Above all, let us know how we can help. We want your children and all our students to succeed, and that means attending school every day possible.

SPOTLIGHT!
Reading Buddies After School Program

Did you know that Hayden Peak offers a Reading Buddies program after school on Wednesday afternoons? Students from Copper Hills High, West Hills Middle, and Hayden Peak Elementary volunteer to read with our students here at Hayden Peak. This program has been a huge success and we are grateful to all those who volunteer in this effort. If you are interested in volunteering or having your child participate in the Reading Buddies please contact the office.

As we begin our holiday season, we are grateful for the students, families, faculty and staff at Hayden Peak Elementary! We are truly blessed to be a part of this amazing community. Have a safe and joyous holiday season!

Boundary Update and Permits for 2019-20
The Jordan School District Board of Education has determined that the boundaries for Hayden Peak Elementary will remain the same for the 2019-20 school year. The Board of Education has also made changes to our school choice permit process. As part of this change, all Jordan District schools are required to revoke permits to 90% of school capacity. At Hayden Peak there will be approximately 85 permits revoked for the 2019-20 school year. Families have been notified if their permits have been revoked. Those families wishing to attend Hayden Peak on permit for the 2019-20 school year will need to apply online for a permit.

If you would like to request a permit for your child to attend a school other than their boundary school, please click the link below.

As a reminder, permit applications submitted during the month of December will not be approved on a first-come, first-served basis but will be approved according to the Board priorities, which are posted at boundary.jordandistrict.org

SPOTLIGHT! After School Activities

Hayden Peak Elementary offers many opportunities for our students to expand and share their talents in after school programs. Over the next few months, we will spotlight each of the programs and how your child can participate. This month we are spotlighting the DANCE CLUB.

The dance club provides an opportunity for your student to learn different dances, cooperation, and teamwork. They meet twice a month on Thursday afternoons after school for 30 minutes. Please contact the school for more information on how your student can participate.

We wish you all a joyous holiday.
